An Internet
Video Guide to Some Jazz Steps
(Vintage
Steps, Solo Steps)

Swing Dance

March 2010
– Disclaimers
a) Free
internet video clips on jazz steps usually serve for purposes of review or
entertainment, rather than of teaching. So they are ordinarily not meant to
replace fully worked-out lessons, be those live in class, distributed on media,
or downloadable from other sites. Anyway: enjoy!
b) As
always, you should respect the state of your health and physical condition when
you start practicing unusual movements. In case of doubt: don’t start, or
consult your physician first.
c) All
of the links given here looked good to me at the time they were included.
However, don’t forget that web pages may always change their address or get
closed down; they may change contents, contain undesirable contents, or may even
be harmful to your data processing system.
d) Youtube
allows us to select a starting point within a video clip by means of a tag attached
to the URL. The part displayed may occasionally set in a few seconds earlier;
so what you see on the screen may start with the last few steps of the previous
movement(s). Still, I used this feature extensively, because it is altogether extremely
helpful, saving viewers both unnecessary download time and navigation on the time
bar.
Anyway, time
readings of the same point in a video may differ somewhat between the different
browsers and viewers used, sometimes even between one attempt and the next.
– Difficulty
My (very personal) assessment
of the difficulty of a move for beginners is expressed by traffic-light colors
that I use in the title line:
· easy · medium · difficult
This
is just for letting you feel less intimidated if you are a newbie and find some
of the steps you are studying difficult at first. After practicing them for a
while you will probably at some point in time wonder how you could have
difficulties in the first place. Let things settle. Instead of trying a difficult
step for one hour in a row you might be more successful spreading your
attempts over six days, spending ten minutes each day.
– Policy for the inclusion of
videos
Note that with each move
listed I am not aiming at a total list of each and every clip containing it,
but only for a few examples that I deem particularly useful, e.g. as they
highlight some aspect or style, or come close to a detailed lesson.
– Policy for the inclusion of
moves
Some moves consist of
repetitions of shorter, say two-count, moves. Some of
these repetitions can be replaced by (parts of) different moves. Some moves,
e.g. a scarecrow upper body and arbitrary steps, can even be combined
simultaneously. All this opens up a vast number of combinations. Hundreds or
thousands have been invented, and still are.
Similarly, some of these
repetitions can be performed at half or double speed, or with syncopation
(tricky rhythm changes).
Recombinations have been listed
only where a widely used or at least catchy name for them was known, and speed
variations are listed simply in line with the clips for the standard speed performance.
Most moves span 8 counts
(beats), but I am also including a few 4-count moves, and even various kinds of
triple steps (2 counts).
– Policy for the naming of moves
For each move, in a main
entry under a main name, possibly chosen from among several names in use, video
links for the move are listed. Its title line contains the names I heard or
read being used, separated by commas. Secondary entries for the additional
names merely point to the main entry. Some names are so popular that they have
been used for many different moves, see for instance Crossovers, Full Break, Flying/Jump
Charleston, Kick and Replace, and Pushes.
If
your favourite name for a move already listed is not
included, and you know of many people using it, feel free to let me know, if
possible with pointers to sources in the web where I can find it used. Please avoid
negative effects in naming, such as covert advertisement.
– Sources
As yet, I have only dealt
with videos that can be viewed on the web free of charge. In the future I may
also add pointers to commercially available media such as DVDs with lessons –
as soon as I possess any. And, er, yes: I wouldn’t really mind receiving free
inspection copies without any obligation …
– Use
of this Guide & Waiver
Non-commercial use of this
page, including reproduction without alteration of the content, is herewith
granted free of charge as long as proper credits to the author are given.
– Help with moves for names
I have seen the following
names of Jazz moves being mentioned on the web. It would be great if you could
help me in finding video clips for them, or tell me for which of the moves that
are already in the guide they are merely additional names!

Apart from the help with
moves and names mentioned above, any further suggestions for the improvement or
extension of this guide are very welcome. Email me, if you
like, using the address shown on my home page.
– Acknowledgements
Of
course, this list would not exist without the many friendly people putting
video clips, step descriptions, and choreographies on the web, as well as
contributing to the creation of these videos, in particular by choreographing
and dancing them. Thanks to all of you!

Full Break I, Shim Sham Break
Comment: The Shim Sham Full Break in Swing (as opposed to tap dancing, see below) is usually danced in versions that agree on 8-1-2-3 but differ in when they switch from steps back to steps forward on 4-5-6-7. Hence there are 3 main distinct moves, walking back on 4-5, 4-5-6, or 4-5-6-7 and then forward on 6-7, 7, or not at all, respectively. In a variation of 8-1-2-3 (Dean Collins ShSh), 8 is a step forward, 1 a toe tap behind, 2 a step back, 3 a shove of the heel forward, turning the toes to the outside.
